Qualified Teacher & Education Officer (SEN)

Bridge the Gap Malvern are looking to recruit a Qualified Teacher/Education Officer to join our highly skilled team, supporting young people age 16+ who have special educational needs and require an innovative, bespoke approach to education and preparation for adulthood.

Teaching sessions will be delivered on a one-to-one basis in a variety of settings such as libraries, student homes or at the BTGM office. Working collaboratively with the team, who coordinate the students’ timetables and deliver activities to support wider aspects of students’ development, you will also provide advice and guidance on appropriate educational activities and courses. An important aspect of the role is monitoring, evidencing and reporting on the academic aspects of all young people’s programmes.

We are looking for an engaging, confident individual with extensive SEN experience to support, guide and inspire young people with additional needs. You will have a patient and empathetic personality, and a passion for working with students who face significant barriers to accessing education, poor mental health and very low self-confidence.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Qualified Teacher & Education Officer (SEN)

Salary: £30,000-£35,000 (full-time based on 37 hours per week)

Hours: negotiable (minimum 25 per week – salary pro-rata)

Location: BTGM Office in Malvern, in student's homes or in the community to suit needs of students

Reporting to: Head of Centre

Main purpose of job

To deliver functional skills maths and English teaching, and support the welfare and care of young people. To monitor, evidence, advise and report on the educational aspects of young people’s programmes.

Job activities

Roles & Responsibilities

• Effectively engage with students and develop trust-based relationships to provide an appropriate level of support, enabling them to access learning
• To deliver face to face, office/home/community based and remote teaching, 1:1 Functional Skills English and maths, Entry Level 1 to Level 2
• Plan, teach and assess functional skills maths and English to young people with a range of SEN and SEMH needs
• To develop and deliver creative and dynamic learning programmes for students. These learning programmes must meet the varied needs of students, using a range of teaching and learning strategies
• Record and collate information on learner progress daily; maintain programme records; write termly reports
• Carry out initial IT training within the student’s home to enable the student to access remote learning if necessary
• Communication and administration of registration for exams
• Attend weekly team meetings and report on progress and challenges
• Monitor Skills Builder progress and offer advice and guidance to Transition Coordinators
• Effectively safeguard young people, working in line with company policies
• Keep data systems up to date
• Attend relevant meetings with external agencies and professionals
• Support young people to access wider courses of their choice
• Communicate with relevant partners to explore wider academic subjects and the identified support needs of individual young people
• Ensure you are familiar with and comply with our Safeguarding Policy
• Manage Health and Safety and Data Protection to legal standards
• Be familiar with students’ risk assessments and individual learning needs
• Liaise with colleagues and parents when teaching within the home and in the community, complying with all safety policies and procedures
• Comply with confidentiality and data protection guidelines at all times
• Support the ethos of BTGM and follow routines and procedures
• Take part in CPD training
• Any other duties/tasks directed by the Head of Centre

Person Specification

You will be a dedicated, committed team player with a strong work ethic and the ability to motivate. An engaging individual capable of supporting, guiding and inspiring young people with additional needs. You will be creative and have a positive approach to dealing with difficult situations. You must be emotionally resilient and of a stable disposition. Flexibility, reliability and organisation are essential qualities, along with patience and a good sense of humour.

Essential

• Qualified Teacher
• A full driving licence and your own vehicle
• Experience of working with young people with SEN and personalising learning to meet needs
• Ability to structure and implement student-led plans, targets and aims
• Ability to understand the scope of individual learner specific requirements
• Confidence to positively resolve issues with learners, families and colleagues
• Confident IT skills and experience using Microsoft Office
• Strong report writing and admin skills
• An understanding of and commitment to safeguarding, health and safety and safe working practices
• Enhanced DBS & Barred List check will be required

Desirable

• Understanding of EHCP and professional child assessments
• A proven track record in delivering Functional Skills
